Victorious

Success! After walking 225 kilometres from Galway to Dublin I have completed my Coast to Coast Charity Walk for Save The Children's Haiti Appeal. My left ankle is a little swollen, but other than that I am in tremendous form and have ben eating like it's going out of fashion since I returned. (Pass the cheesecake? Oh wait, I've eaten it all.) The final 2 days were tricky enough. Saturday's walk from Edenderry to Maynooth was really tough because in the Kildare backroads of Timahoe there is not a shop or pub in sight. I walked from 9am to 4pm without stopping and not one eatery did I pass. In Maynooth that night, I was almost incapable of walking from stiffness and soreness but Profiteroles, Match Of The Day, Deadliest Plane Disasters and a lot of sleep sorted me right out. Maynooth wore a fluffy snow skirt the following morning and I again walked with a mission and without a break until I arrived in the fabled promised land of Ringsend. My beloved Laura walked the last 5 k or so with me and I was delirious when we met. Above are the photographs of the grand arrival. (Nice one to Laura, Erin, Dara, Colm and Liam for clapping me in!!) I am elated and buzzing to finish and over 2 grand sterling has been raised so far. You can continue to sponsor me until May at The Official Sponsorship Page
I would like to thank:
All my friends and family, Laura, everybody who sponsored , supported, cheered and helped the cause along the way, B&B Ireland, Rick O Shea and Cormac Battle at 2fm, The Kiosk on Phantom 105.2, Hayden's Hotel in Ballinasloe, Anseo on Camden Street, Paul Allen, The kind people I met in Galway, Westmeath, Kildare, Offaly and Dublin, the artists on my Ipod and of course, Save The Children
I will post up some video pieces I did during the week

Ooooooh Bodyform for you

Hello jack planancers,

Christ on a bike - The sponsorships are rolling in! Wow! I am utterly overwhelmed and extremely grateful to everybody who has chipped in. I am delighted to report we are way over the target figure thanks to all y'all! The amount going to Save The Children's Emergency Haiti fund stands at £1920.95 and rising. That works out at about €2185 so far. THAT IS SO INCREDIBLE and makes my little heart skip like a schoolgirl! Thank You. It also needs to be stated that I am humbled to have received so much non monetary assistance and goodwill along the way - waves, texts, calls, massages, beds to kip in, ovens to cook in, baths to wash in, pubs to go potty in, cups of tea etc. The final credits will roll when I've finished the walk but so far, this is just smashing. Well done and thank you.

On a personal level, I am making more discoveries about my body than I think I did during puberty. I am walking roughly 5 k per hour and 35k per day. That works out at, let's say, 7 hours walking each day and throw in an hour lunch, that's roughly 8 hours on the go in total. The bizarre thing is that it is actually getting easier each day. For example, on Tuesday I walked 42k to Ballinasloe and wanted to cry like a slapped baby. I was in a jocker - blisters and stinging, swollen feet. Today and yesterday I walked almost 75k combined (Athlone to Edenderry) and I feel stiff and tired but overall, pretty comfortable and raring to go tomorrow. As many people know, I am not the most athletic person you'll encounter and I generally break out in a rash at the thought of exercise. However, I think my body has now gotten used to walking for 7 hours a day on many different standards of road. It wakes up and says "Hit me". It expects it and is preparing for it each day. This adaptation might be glaringly obvious to many people but to me it is startling and exciting. In fact the worst time in terms of pain is not when you're walking. It's when you're not walking. That's when you feel the gremlins in the works, tightening your quads and inflaming your ankles. I don't feel much when I'm actually going; at least not until about 4 hours without a break. A cross Ireland trek sounds daunting but if panty mc panterson here can do this, many of you can too. I'm not trying to say it's easy. It aint. I'm knackered and my legs feel like they are connected to live cables. But I am trying to say your body will surprise you. I know a guy (I was in primary school with him) who, by his own admission, carries quite a lot more weight than me. That didn't stop him walking from Mizen to Malin head for Cystic Fibrosis. Amazing feat. (No pun intended) His name is Emmet Ryan and he's a remarkable guy - look him up!

Tonight I bed down in Edenderry, County Offaly. A lovely, funny guy called Paul is putting me up and I thank him for his hot water, squishy bed, delicious pizza, invaluable laptop and general savageness. I might even have a pint tonight. Have been dry all week but the goo won't go away. Tomorrow I will head for Maynooth (33k I think) and on Sunday i shall arrive in Ringsend, Dublin Bay (30k) I shall lash up photos and video pieces I did along the way when possible. I will leave you with ten random discoveries I have made on this trip so far

1)Badgers are killed all the time in County Westmeath. There are dead ones on the sides of roads everywhere
2)John Updike is a really really really really good writer. (Read 'Rabbit Run')
3)'Beatles for Sale' is a dark horse for my new favourite Beatles album. It's a corker
4)Farming gentlemen driving tractors on secondary roads in Ireland always salute you with a swoosh of the pointing finger on their right hand. It's a lovely trait. Car drivers rarely do it. I hereby christen it 'The tractor finger'
5)The R400 that crosses the N6 to Rhode in County Offaly from Westmeath is very beautiful
6)Googlemaps's written instructions are as easy to follow as Mulholland Drive. At least, in the midlands they are useless
7) There is no moat or even so much as a castle in Moate. Very disappointed and disillusioned
8)'Under armour' skintight shorts will stop your legs chafing (sp) when walking long distance. They are fantastic.
9)Billy Bragg is the man. I would happily exchange my hips to be able to have written the following lines:

" She danced with me and I still hold that memory
Soft and sweet
And I stare up at her window
As I walk down her street
But I never made the first team,
I just made the first team laugh
And she never came to the phone
She was always in the bath
In the end, it took me a dictionary
To find out the meaning of unrequited
While she was giving herself for free
At a party to which I was never invited"

Genius - see song of the day

10)I remain heavily addicted to tangle twisters. They are ice lolly royalty and I am their loyal and faithful subject

honourable mention: sea trout is the most sensational fish ever

Ok, talk soon

Greetings from subtropical Athlone

Alright party people,

How are ya. Ace I hope. I have done three days and I apologise that this is the first chance I have had to get online. I'm sure you'll forgive me. And whaddya know..I have approximately 5 minutes to write this mail! So....
Day 1 Galway to Athenry 23k
Nice walk but developed horrendouse blisters because of bad sock arrangement. Despite what people say, double socks is a no-no. Stayed with lovely couple who made bacon and cabbage to die for
Day 2 Athenry to Ballinasloe 42k (ended up as 47k)
I shant lie...this day was gruelling. Got pissed on (figuratively), got lost, and got a bit sore. Blisters threatened to make a grown man cry. Took nearly 9 hours, but I bloody well did it! Slept for eleven hours after watching the Reds somehow beat Milan
Day 3 The 'Sloe to Athlone. 24k
Amazing Day. Gorgeous weather and I purposely went at a slow pace. Loved every second of it. I have finished 2 audiobooks now. just ate seatrout....mmm

Ok, really have to go. Getting a sports massage (thanks colm and niamh). I'm loving this and thanks to all for continued support. By the way...Rossa, I don't have your number to wish you happy birthday. Text Me!!!

How Soon Is Now?

Did the final bit of prep yesterday by walking 36k. Got loads of essential gear, generously donated and borrowed from my cousin and parents respectively. My dad loaned me rakes of useful stuff like windbeaters and super space aged socks and even a whistle that turns into a torch and a compass! Nice one pops! My cousin Simon has just come back from Chad with the Irish Army and he had so much invaluable advice it's ridiculous. Nice one cuz! Walking back to the house I was all kitted out and felt like Mr Soft from those Softmints ads in the 90s. Also, fair play to the wise soul in The Irish Times who gave the walk a plug in yesterday's paper. So, the preperation is all over bar the shouting. Getting the bus over to Salthill in Galway tomorrow and the games begin Monday at approximately 8.30am. I am buzzin. I'll be updating the blog in Internet Cafe's etc. along the way and I'll do my darndest to get pictures up as I go. I'll leave you with the final route and an old ditty you can tap your toes to.....

Werner Herzog - A man after my own heart

As if all the donations flying in isn't enough, I just found a further source of inspiration - an article about director Werner Herzog's passion for walking. I roll the credits for Oisin for providing me with that - Nice 1

Oh, and here is the finalised route. 41.9k on day 2 is the killer one! N.B. This route was made unbelievably easy to plan thanks to the generosity and hosting of my amazing sponsors B&B Ireland

Walk publicised on 2fm & welcome to sponsors B&B Ireland

Yesh yesh y'all,

Sir Blisterfoot here. Just a quick heads up to say I will be publicising the walk on Rte 2fm today at about 2.15pm. Rick O Shea has made the excellent choice of publicing the walk (unending thanks to him and Mr. Battle), supporting us on the airwaves. We're a few days old and have already raised over a grand (in euro) so it needs not be said the support has been outstanding. Thanks

I would also like to welcome B&B Ireland on board as generous official sponsors of the walk. They are the body that hosts many beautiful establishments across the nation and they are kindly putting me up along the way. I am indebted to them as I have a very embarrassing bank balance at present ('don't we bleedin' all' says you) and can do with all the help I can get. Their wonderful website can be found HERE.

Walked 35k on Saturday and discovered something crucial - I badly need bicycle shorts. I won't go into detail but I had a touch of the John Wayne's by the time I got in. Made it to Ticknock and it is gorgeous. Remember being there as a chissler and it's as deadly as I remember. I have also discovered the wonderful world of podcasts particularly the Guardian book and football ones.

FACT OF THE DAY: A postage stamp contains 1 tenth of a calorie and this is made known to all posties on their breifing when they get the job. My housemate works for An Post...so there
